Written by Katie Cappiello

Developed in collaboration with The Arts Effect All-Girl Theater Co.

Directed by Katie Cappiello & Meg McInerney

Featuring the award-winning teen actors of The Arts Effect

She wanted it.  Did she say “No”?  She was drunk and out of control.  She deserved it– did you see what she was wearing?  The guys wouldn’t need to force her.  Why did she have condoms in her bag?  She prides herself on being a slut.

One Friday night, 16-year-old Joey Del Marco parties with three of her best guy friends…and her world comes tumbling down.  In a culture where silence, judgement, and slut shaming allow sexual violence to thrive, will Joey find support and justice?  When past choices and actions are used against her, will her voice be heard?  How will one night forever change not just Joey, but her whole community?

“Katie Cappiello’s powerhouse script examines the double standard that celebrates sexual activity by boys but denigrates it for girls. The girls’ realistic dialogue makes the audience feel as though it were sitting in the gym locker room, overhearing painfully intimate conversations… Insightful look at the sensitive issues of rape and cyberbullying with heartfelt performances from the impressive all-female cast. ” – Time Out New York

SLUT is truthful, raw and immediate. See this play and witness what American young women live with everyday.” – Gloria Steinem

SLUT pulses with the fierce voices of the girls who created it. This is an exceptional play that looks you straight in the eye and tells you what it means to grow up female and sexual in a world marked by double standards and violence. It sparkles with insight and scenes of heartbreaking truth that you won’t see anywhere else. Slut should be required reading for every educator, parent and girl.” – Rachel Simmons, author of Odd Girl Out and The Curse of the Good Girl.

“Engrossing drama” – New York Magazine

“Leading the charge to end slut shaming for got!” – Teen Vogue

Summer Classes 2013

Our summer semester has been developed for enthusiastic young artists and performers ages 6–16 interested in exploring the exciting world of acting and theater. The Arts Effect has the perfect summer program for actors of all levels, interests, and schedules!

Through an award-winning combination of sensory work, improvisation, and character/scene study, our program focuses on the advancement of the actor’s skill set and audition technique! Throughout the sessions, students will be assigned scenes and/or monologues to prepare and then present at the end of each workshop for friends and family. Students will also have the opportunity to work with and prepare authentic film/TV/commercial audition sides. New and returning students can look forward to a unique and rewarding creative experience – Arts Effect training is custom-tailored to best suit the needs and goals of each student!

STUDENTS FOCUS ON…

  • Technique Strengthening: Go beyond pretending and role-playing and actually experience REAL LIFE on stage or screen. Our Method-based technique centers on bringing the actor’s own life experience and understanding to character and scene work.
  • Improvisation: Improv is becoming very common in the audition room and on set. The fast-paced, quick-thinking nature of improvisation is key to bringing naturalism and realism to any actor’s work.
  • Character Development: The secret to quickly uncovering the W’s of any and every character!
  • Scene Study: Understand the structure, relationship, objectives, and conflicts of your script and/or audition sides. Learn to work with other actors, listen and respond, and exist in the moment!
  • Script Analysis (including subtext and logic work): Discover what’s simmering under the lines and hiding in every moment.
  • Monologue Preparation: Let us help you find and perfect your monologue.
  • Audition Preparation: Important, helpful, and fun auditioning tips to prepare young professionals for cold readings, advanced audition sides, and interview questions.
  • Cold Reading: This most intimidating audition practice will be debunked!
